I`m a Cambridge University English graduate (graduated 1999) and I went on to have a career in television, working for the BBC. After that, I worked in politics and the charity sector and I am currently the director of communications and deputy chief executive of an NHS charity. I offer two distinct services - tuition for for school and university students, and advanced English coaching for proficient non-native professionals seeking confidence and linguistic precision. For school, college and university students, I can tutor at any level from Key Stage 2 to degree level. I'm also happy to help with media and communications courses, particularly around essay writing and how to structure an argument.

For Key Stage 2 and 3, I integrate English language and English literature teaching to create a joined-up approach which covers all the rules while using interesting and exciting texts which will stimulate the imagination. For GCSE and above, I will teach all set texts, plus any additional reading you want to improve your course. I will bring each book, poem, play or text alive, and help you write about it in a way that is natural and convincing. I will equip you with the tools to analyse a work of literature you have never seen before or one you have been studying for weeks. I teach using a method which encourages maximum student engagement. I don`t lecture, but I probe, ask questions and encourage the student to come to their own conclusions. This way, I foster an understanding within the student which allows them to go on and use those skills in the future.

For adults, I offer one-to-one advanced English coaching for proficient non-native professionals who already use English regularly and wish to refine precision, confidence and range. Lessons focus on vocabulary, grammar, register and nuance through guided discussion and close reading, including classic English literature where appropriate. Most sessions take place online, which works particularly well for advanced language discussion and close reading. In-person sessions in central London are available by arrangement for longer bookings. This is bespoke, intellectually engaged work for adults operating at a high level in professional or cultural contexts. I am a Cambridge English graduate with a professional background in senior communications.
