  1. White Students Less Likely to Apply to University than Teens from any other Ethnic Group

    The university and colleges admissions service UCAS has released data which shows that white teenagers are now less likely to apply for university than teenagers from any other ethnic group. The research revealed that fewer than three out of ten 18 year olds have applied for degree courses in Autumn, while applications from black students have increased significantly since 2006.

    Figures released this week reveal that girls who take the skills-based science BTEC out-perform boys, despite the fact that girls are significantly numbered by boys on the courses. Pearson, the organisation which administrates the BTEC in skills-based science, said that when girls do opt for the course, they tend to do extremely well.

    The new look GCSEs have recently been unveiled by the government in an attempt to make the qualification more difficult.

  8. Schools Given Power to Set Their Own Term Dates

    The Department for Education has announced that all schools are to be given the power to set their own term dates. The changes are part of a broader government deregulation bill which take powers away from local authorities to regulate the schools in their area. Under the proposals, school heads and governors would decide on the dates of school terms.

  9. Ofsted to Mark Schools on use of Funds for Disadvantaged Students

    School inspectors Ofsted have announced that primary and secondary schools may be stripped of their ‘outstanding’ status if the schools’ students from the most disadvantaged backgrounds fail to make good progress. Ofsted will now put increased scrutiny on schools, examining the use of the pupil premium payments which are reserved for the poorest students.
