Why Online Tuition Should Not be Perceived as Inferior to In-Person Tuition

There is often a consensus generally amongst parents and tutees that online tuition does not have the same impact as in-person tuition. Whilst this may be true on paper, online tuition offers a range of advantages that are not valued enough comparatively.

Flexibility is often seen as the main advantage, both on the side of the tutee and the tutor. This is because rescheduling becomes easier from both parties and there are overall fewer reasons for online tuition being cancelled compared to in person.

Despite internet connections being a prominent problem, on average UK residents have adequate speeds for WiFi (69.4Mbps average) and so have a lower probability of experiencing any problems in relation to this.

Furthermore, teaching becomes enhanced as tutors can use diagrams and illustrations at ease to visually explain topics easier, as opposed to drawing inadequate diagrams that may not resemble the original image. An example could be a well detailed heart diagram labelled on the internet compared to a weakly drawn diagram of the heart that is not presented clearly. Also, online platforms for lessons feature the option of revisiting the online whiteboard or canvas used at any time, making it optimal for students to refer back, in the event that they forget something or want to revise something that they did not write down.

On top of this, there are some platforms that allow the students to interact and write things down too, as if the tutor and tutee were doing a calculation or question together. This can be critical evidence to reject the notion that online tuition takes away anything that may be deemed immersive or interactive.

Online tuition has evolved over the years, especially after the lockdown era where this was the only option possible. Now that we are past that time, it should not give us any incentive or thought to abandon the effectiveness of it. In an age where students now learn through a multitude of methods (e.g watching videos) rather than just looking at a textbook, it is imperative that we support these methods and online tuition does this.

Altogether, online tuition should not be underestimated for the value that it brings and in some aspects should regarded to the same degree as in person tuition.
