A teacher in North Yorkshire has overcome his dyslexia to be named the most outstanding new teacher in the country, the BBC has reported. Edward Vickerman is head of business at The Freeston Business and Enterprise College in Normanton.

Edward, 26, said that he was sidelined at school because he had been labelled ’dyslexic’, and was not expected to achieve much. However, his colleagues and students at Freeston have said that he is a ’whirlwind’ in the classroom, and has invigorated his department. Edward says that he developed ways to cope with his learning difficulties while working in the hotel industry before beginning a postgraduate teaching qualification. He uses other methods to teach in the classroom, which make use of new technology, rather than relying on writing.

The Teaching Awards were founded by Lord Puttnam in 1998. They aim to reward teachers across the country for their outstanding work in an industry which previously receive much positive publicity for teachers.
