Testing Our Tutors’ Effectiveness

Hello! Things always seem to better in the summer when the sun comes out. For tutoring it’s a really nice thing because when you head out to teach a student, and often as you finish, it’s still light outside, and it doesn’t feel as though you have to get home as quickly as possible because it’s so late (and so cold!).

Something I started doing this week was working on setting up an analysis of the effectiveness of our tutors. Previously we’ve obviously received feedback from both tutor and student, and generally it’s always very positive, but we would like a more objective measure of a student’s progress. Obviously we often discover a student’s end grade, and how much they have improved, but the improvement could always be for a number of factors, and we really want something to properly measure the effect of a tutor.

What I’m looking to do is develop some exams which will test a student’s level before they begin tuition, and after a few lessons (maybe five lessons). This test is going to be quite a difficult thing to develop, because I don’t want to test the student’s increase in knowledge, but more their ability to learn independently, and tackle problems which they may have had difficulty with before.
