I spent a lot of last week looking at Google and the way it finds us tutors and students. There are two main ways; I think I mentioned last week that I was looking at Adwords. This allows you to ask for an ad to be displayed (on the right hand side) when someone types tutor or tuition, or something similar as a search term. It’s a really great system, because you only pay if someone clicks on your ad. Anyway, I’ve been tinkering with that, and have set up a few experiments to test out different variations. It should all be pretty streamlined within a couple of months.
The other way is actually trying to appear higher in the main search list. Obviously if we were number one when someone types in tutor it would be brilliant. A company has been helping us with this, but there are lots of things I can do too. One of them is to change the way our tutor articles, tuition news articles, and these blogs are displayed, by using a program called Wordpress, which is much more Google friendly. I’m working on that, but again it’s more programming, and it really does begin to get a little boring after a while. It should be well worth it though.
