We had a major shock over the weekend when I realised that there was a problem with an address function on our website. Basically when we enter someone’s address into our system what’s supposed to happen is that our website ‘talks’ to Streetmap, and finds the ordinance survey coordinates for that address. This is how we work out the distance between tutors and students. However, our website wasn’t doing this correctly for a handful of students (it didn’t affect tutors’ addresses). Cue me spending most of Sunday night trying to work out what the problem was, and finally fixing it. The downside has been that a minority of students over the last few weeks will not have had their requests for a tutor posted on the website. Really disappointing from our point of view, but the silver lining is that I found the problem now, and have put steps in place to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.
Elsewhere there’s nothing so exciting to mention. I didn’t get a huge amount of time to get stuck into programming last week, because there just seemed to be a lot of odd jobs that needed doing, and I was covering for Harriet on a couple of days.
There is something happening soon that’s quite exciting though; we’re looking into providing tutors to families in Hong Kong for long-term periods. I’ve recently uploaded a page explaining what we’re doing, and one of my tasks for this week to get the new student form working. Assuming everything goes well, we’re hoping to first send some tutors over there next summer, if not during Easter 2011.
