The Knox County school system in the US has just been awarded a grant of $100,000 for private tuition. Reported on knoxnews.com, the money will be used to fund a tuition programme which will run during the summer and autumn of this year, providing both English and Maths lessons to struggling students.

There are four schools involved in the project: Dogwood Elementary School, and Carter, South Doyle and Whittle Springs Middle Schools. They have been chosen because tests showed that their students with disabilities didn’t make as much progress as expected under the new ‘No Child Left Behind’ Act. The federal law has been recently introduced to combat what was seen as a rapidly increasing gap between high achieving students, and those who struggled to leave high school with adequate grades.

The programme will use up to 8 part-time teachers, who will tutor each student for 1-1.5 hours, 2-3 times per week. Some of the lessons will be in small groups, but each student will also receive regular one-to-one tuition, and it even includes providing transport for the students during the summer.
