An organisation called Literacy Volunteers has begun training tutors to teach English as a Foreign language to residents in Union County. Reported on the Suburban News website, 26% of adults in the area have difficulty reading, writing and speaking English, and the non-profit organisation has decided to act to improve the lives of over 600 adults.
Literacy Volunteers have begun the Tutor Workshop Series, where they hope to train more than 200 tutors. The tutors will be mainly working with adults requiring basic reading skills, and also help with English as a Second language. However, LV also have tutors who can help adults to achieve their GED (graduate diploma), and citizenship preparation studies.
Once tutors have completed the Tutor Workship, a series consisting of 3 classess, each of which the prospective tutors must attend, they will be matched with a student based on availability and location.
