82 students attending university in the Aberdeen area have successfully completed the BP tutoring scheme, supporting primary and secondary schools in the area by tutoring students alongside classroom teaching. The university students are from the University of Aberdeen, Robert Gordon University and Aberdeen College, and have just completed the voluntary course which lasted for 14 weeks.
The scheme aims to provide valuable classroom and tutoring experience to young academics, and hopefully encourage some of them to consider a career in teaching and education. Of course it also provides extra help for students in the area, and it is this collaboration which has been praised so highly by Aberdeen County council, and BP, the scheme’s sponsor.
Among the feedback from the tutors, Milena Stawicka, an Economics and International Relations said that it had developed her creativity by requiring her to think more about the way that she presented and tutored the kids. Another tutor, Rosanna Garden, said that the experience has given her the confidence to consider a career in teaching.
