A student in America has recently given her perspective on using a private tutor. Britni Berg was looking to improve her score on the ACT (American College Test), and thought that attending a tuition school would massively improve her score in just one session. She explains that she thinks people expect too much from private tuition, and that it isn’t a miracle solution.
Britni says she feels that the terms ‘tutor’ and ‘ACT’ are inextricably linked, and it’s become unusual for students taking the college admissions test not to be using a tutor at the same time. However, her hopes of having one lesson, and suddenly finding that the previously impossible test was a breeze, were quickly dashed after realising the reality of private tuition.
Berg isn’t sure where her misapprehension comes from, but she’s aware that she’s not alone, and there is a general feeling that using a tutor will improve someone’s ability at a rate no other method could, and that tutors teach valuable skills and techniques (or ‘tricks’ as Britni calls them) that can’t be learnt at school. While this may be true to some extent, tutoring certainly isn’t the 5 minute fix that many see it to be, and it’s only when combined with perseverance and dedication that private tuition has the effect that we all want it to have.
