Tutors in Wales have received recognition of their achievements over the last year, by being given prestigious awards. Reported on walesonline.co.uk, Melaneia Warwick, Victoria Jones and Rhian Evans were among those tutors praised at a national awards ceremony in Cardiff. The awards, called ‘Inspire! Tutor and Mentor Award’ were created by NIACE Dysgu Cymru, a charity encouraging adult education in Wales.
Melaneia Warwick received the Higher Education Tutor of the Year award for her work delivering courses within communities on behalf of the University of Wales. She was praised for using her knowledge and skills to engage adults and deliver innovative projects. It was said that Melaneia introduced many adults to higher education, who would not have considered it in the past, and that was Melaneia’s motivation for her work: changing people’s views from ‘I can’t’ to ‘I can’.
Victoria Jones won the English for Speakers of Other Languages Tutor of Year award, having worked with people from over 100 countries in the last year. She has worked at a language centre in Cardiff for 8 years, and was described as ‘friendly and trustable’ by her students. Victoria said that many of the people she tutors are unaccompanied asylum seekers, and she’s inspired by their drive to integrate themselves into life in the UK.
