Suddenly Programming is Easy

In the end I asked Harriet to cover for Laura for the end of last week, which was great. It let me get on with my work, and meant I could update Harriet on the changes since she left in January (so now there won’t be so much to update her on when she returns for good in October).

I actually spent a lot of the last week on updates to website that have been on my list of things to do for about 18 months. None of them are critical, but they all improve the website by small amounts. The weird thing is that I haven’t really looked at these updates in 2012 because I’ve been so busy with other things, but they are much less intimidating than I remember, which I think is because I’m a better programmer than I used to be. The updates were scored according to their difficulty and priority, and then the sum of those scores added so I could decide in what order to do them (most important and easiest first, and least important and hardest last). The funny thing is that updates which I ranked as being quite difficult have actually turned out to be fairly quick. Anything with a difficulty score of less than 5 (out of 10) took less than half an hour!

To keep myself sane, because I can’t just program non-stop for a week, I was also continuing the categorisation of disciplines last week. I’ve decided to try and do the categorisation myself initially, and then ask friends for their opinions on changes. That way I can ask them to look at what I’ve done on my beautiful webpage, rather than laying out a hundred little pieces of paper and trying to go through them. It seems to be working, so fingers crossed that I may have completed this first part of the categorisation by the end of the month.
