Special Schools to Create a Newly Skilled Workforce

Fifteen new schools which are specifically designed to ready schoolchildren for the workplace are to be set up in England. For pupils aged 14 and over, the schools combine academic teaching with work based training. Pupils do a 9-5 day in order to prepare them for the work place.

The scheme is backed by employers such as Hilton Hotels, Michelin tyres, Ikea and Aston Villa Football Club.

While supporters argue that this is a necessary step forward, critics say it could mean pupils are pushed down a narrow path for too early.

All will offer GCSEs in English, maths and science, the government says, as well as A-levels and vocational qualifications, but will offer a more practical way of learning.

The idea behind them is to involve businesses so that pupils leave school with the skills needed by local and national employers.
