Other than the tutor assessments I did on Thursday, it was a fairly unremarkable week last week. Some of my time was taken up by arranging interviews for Harriet’s three month replacement from January. I’m doing them next Friday and thankfully I’m more concerned about telling some good people that we’ve gone with someone else, rather than concerned about not finding someone who can do the job. The great thing about our tutor assessments is that it’s pass or fail, and there is no maximum or minimum number of tutors we look to recruit. The result is that I’m never left telling a tutor that they did everything right, but we just haven’t got space for them. I do have to do that when there’s just one position available though, which makes that email quite difficult to write.
Generally things are going very well at the moment. September, October and November were our best ever in terms of number of lessons tutored, and even though it’s early days so far, it looks as though December will follow suit. Looking back at the last few years is a little strange, because I can remember a time when I knew every single tutor and student because I dealt with them all on a daily basis. However, now it’s not unusual for me to come across a tutor/student who has given/had loads of lessons with us over a few years, but who I don’t recognise. It’s a strange feeling because I’ve worked hard to get to this stage; where the number of students we can teach isn’t limited by the amount of time I have available. Yet, part of me can’t help but feel that I was more valuable before, even though, logically, I know it’s not true.
