Over the past few years there has been a significant rise in the popularity of private tuition in the UAE, with parents opting for home tuition to boot their children’s education in core subjects. However, a strict warning has been issued by government officials, stating that both public and private school teachers should not offer their services as private tutors.
A spokesman in Dubai said that any teacher who offers private tuition will be terminated, and that those who engage in the practice would be damaging their reputations. The government emphasised that parents who are concerned about their child’s progress should discuss this with their schools rather than hiring a private tutor.
However, the ban on private tuition has been met with anger by both parents and teachers, who argue that they should be free to buy and sell educational services. Teachers were keen to point out that given that the salaries of school teachers are so low, having the option to top up their income and skills is even more important.
