England's university applications down 10%

There has been a 10% drop in the number of people from England applying to study in the UK when higher fees start, figures show.

The university admissions service, Ucas, says 46,413 fewer students from England have applied than at the same time last year.

This is no surprise, of course, considering that England is now the most expensive country in the world in which to study for a public degree. Plus, admissions were up last year as many raced to beat the introduction of increased fees. But how much of a problem is the drop in admissions, really? Considering there have many many articles on the fact that many more people than ever before now go to University and that more and more graduates are failing to get a graduate job after their studies, should we really be that concerned?

For the past few years the arguments have centered on the undermining of degree level study in recent times. Perhaps those who have been deterred are those who may fare better with an earlier entry into the job market and the gaining of real workplace experience.
