Characterized by the discipline of academics and the competence of professionals, ATS (Arabic and Translation Studies Division) at the AUC (American University in Cairo) has deservedly assumed its distinguished place in the world of languages among academic institutions. In class, we are not after translating a given text; but focus upon training in how to translate a given text; how to identify the areas of untranslatability and suggest problem-solving strategies; how to be prepared for a future career in translation, and how to work under time pressure, whether market pressure and/or the pressure of the work environment. Therefore, the success of any translation course depends on 50% on the course delivery, i.e. lectures and 50% on student participation. Translation Linguistics is a sort of rigorous practice or drill in a specific inter-disciplinary field. It is paramount importance that both the instructor and the students adhere, to the letter, to the economic domain of practice in this designated course. This course is divided into five sections; section one presents an introduction to all translators in different fields, section two devotes to compiling a mini-mini glossary of economic terminology, section three designates to some selected topics in economics, section four includes a list of some common business abbreviations and symbols that might help students in the economic translation process, and finally section five sheds light on Arabic editing skills, some problematic areas and common mistakes in Arabic. The global picture will then reveal itself in a fine symphony that will ultimately be produced. ATS trusts that all its students will give their full support to this collective effort by fulfilling their share of the 50% at home.
