I’ve been doing a lot of work on qualifications over the last week, because I realised that the way I was categorising qualification types wasn’t ideal. The plan was to give each qualification type a score to represent a tutor’s ability having passed that qualification type. For example, an A Level may have scored 60 out of 100 and a GCSE 40. The plan was then to reduce the achievement score automatically depending on the grade the tutor got, so maybe an A* at A Level would be 60, an A 59, and so on. However, it seems fairly obvious now that I should manually assign a score for every grade for each qualification type, which is a lot more work, but will be a much better system.
At the risk of sounding incredibly boring, the other thing I spent a lot of time on in the last 7 days was creating a better class structure for our website. I’m not going to lie, this is a pretty geeky endeavour, but it massively appeals to the maths side of my brain, because once I understood the way classes are supposed to work, it was all about structuring everything properly, and trying to avoid repetition. There is a practical use though! It will ultimately make the website run much much quicker, and will reduce the amount of work necessary every time I need to make an update.
