Increase interest in your subject by making it relevant

Academic subjects can be so dry when you’re at school. Teachers try hard to make it interesting but the same things just don’t interest everyone.

This year I am determined to get my students reading more. Reading more is key to understanding the techniques used by authors - the analysis of which is a key skill in both English Language and Literature. It also improves vocabulary, spelling, creative writing, paragraphing and sentence construction.

Can you find something in your subject that links a lot of skills together with something interesting. Can Maths or Physics be applied to areas of Engineering interest, Chemistry and Biology to the natural world? If we, as tutors can relate our lessons to something that matters to the student then we are so much more likely to get a strong response.

Reading can be tailored to any interest, so can other subjects, if you just look around you and try to make it real for your student.
