The Christmas period is always an interesting time for private tuition. For lots of students exams are just around the corner, and they’re keen to ramp up lessons while off school. However, tutors can be in a different position; while some tutors will be grateful to be tutoring more, others will be going home to their families, and will want a break. We find that there is a significant drop in lessons over the last 10 days of December, which is even more unusual when you consider that the equivalent time just before the summer exams is ridiculously busy.
For us, Christmas is a relatively quiet time because it’s unusual for people to ask for a new tutor. Even though exams are coming up, there seems to be a sense that Christmas is too busy a time to also begin a tuition relationship. The other issue is probably that the January exams aren’t seen to be as crucial as those in June, so there isn’t the last minute panic to find a tutor.
