  2. 26-12-13: Exam Results Are Determined by Genetic Factors

    A new study suggests that genetic factors contribute to about 60% of variation in GCSE exam results. Scientists at the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London studied academic performance in over 11,000 identical and non-identical twins, and found that on average genes explained a considerable level of the differences in performance in core subjects.

  3. 24-12-13: Ofsted Chief Highlights North-South Divide in Education

    Schools Inspectors Ofsted have released their annual report, which shows that the regional disparities in England are like “two nations”. Although the report showed general improvement in schools across the country, it also showed that 250,000 students are attending schools judged to be inadequate.

    Children’s charities including Barnardo’s have said that the poorest school children have suffered ‘stealth cuts’ to grants which were designed to help them stay in education.

    A UK club of schools dedicated to improving exam results has said that students should be taught how to pass international education tests. The Performance in Excellence club has said international tests are now so politically significant that students should be taught how to prepare for them.

    A new report released by the Higher Education Policy Institute has said that the UK’s top universities are as exclusive as ever, and are not trying hard enough to attract students from poorer backgrounds.

  7. 10-12-13: Scheme to Fund Science and Engineering Projects Announced

    The government has announced plans for a new scheme under which post-graduate students will be trained in science and engineering. The scheme, which will cost £350m, aims to train over 3,500 students in the hopes of boosting Britain’s economy.

  8. 05-12-13: Literacy Trust Survey Says Boys Likely to Hate Writing

    Results of a poll issued by the National Literacy Trust suggest that boys are twice as likely as girls to say they don’t like to write. About 20% of boys surveyed said that they did not enjoy writing, compared with just 8% of girls who said the same thing.
