Having sorted our new website design last week, I’m just wondering what to put on our homepage. The content hasn’t changed for ages, and I think it seems a little weird. The four main headings: Find a Tutor, About Us, Subjects and Pricing and Contact Us are genuinely 4 of the most viewed pages on the site, and I think they cover the main things that students and parents are looking for when they get to the site. There isn’t the need to do the same for tutors, because they’re generally better at navigating websites, and we’ve always been complemented on our recruitment and the clarity of the website for prospective tutors. However, underneath the four main headings on the homepage is a load of twaddle which was put there solely for website optimisation, and I’d like to remove that because I think it ruins our otherwise elegant and informative homepage. Plus, search engines are becoming so good now at recognising genuine good content rather than ‘cheats’ to increase rankings, so it’s become increasingly pointless.
The question is, what do we put on the homepage instead? I’m hoping to continue having testimonials, but maybe putting them on every page, and I’d also like to add more attractive tutor profiles on lots of pages. By that I don’t mean profiles of attractive tutors, but if we were to add the tutor’s photo and name then I think parents and students would see Blue Tutors as being a group of tutors, rather than a faceless organisation. Of course, we’ll need to get tutors’ permission first; don’t worry, we’re not going to give out any personal information without permission.
