Tuition Over Christmas

Christmas is an interesting time for us. December only month of the academic year when the amount of tutoring taking place is lower than the previous month. This is strange because usually school holidays mean more lessons, not fewer. Obviously Christmas must make a difference, and we notice sometimes it’s from the students’ points of view, and sometimes it’s the tutors’.

Some students see the 2 weeks away from school as a chance to spend some extra time with their tutor. However, probably more families use that period to visit relatives or go on holiday. Sometimes a parent will say to us that their son or daughter has been working really hard and deserves time away from their studying.

Tutors are in a similar position to students. So many tutors in London grew up elsewhere so are away for at least some part of the school holidays. Also, for tutors who have a number of students, if the tutor wants a holiday at any time during the academic year, they might try to take it when at least some of their students are away, like over Christmas.

With the possibility of either tutor or student being away or not wanting lessons, it means that the time between the 20th of December and the new year is a bit quiet for lessons. However, with the increase in popularity of online tuition this is changing, and it’s probably better for a student’s long term tutor to have a lesson or two online over the Christmas period, rather than us looking for a replacement tutor to cover just a few lessons.
