The first thing we tend to ask tutors when interviewing is why they want to be a Blue Tutor. Obviously it’s really two questions, why they want to work for us, but also their motivation to tutor at all.
We understand that for many people tuition is a need to make money. Many of our tutors are recent graduates trying to begin a career but to do that they need to earn a little extra which tutoring provides, but there’s obviously a reason that so many of them opt to tutor rather than working in a pub.
The overwhelming response we receive is that, as a tutor is graduating, they suddenly realise it’s the end of their academic life. The immediate reaction is “yes, no more exams!” but after thinking about it there’s the realisation that they loved learning and the reason they reached Oxford or Cambridge university was because of a passion for their subject, and it’s not something they’re ready to leave behind.
Sometimes it’s only in our interview that a tutor realises it’s the end of academia for them, and suddenly you can see their eyes light up about the prospect of tutoring. It’s such a lovely thing when tutors begin to talk about their enthusiasm for their subject and how they want to pass that on to other students in the hope that others will find the same joy at school.
