In the US many private tutoring agencies are cashing in on the budget cuts which are pinching the school system. In a report by Melissa Preddy, it’s examined how and why companies offering private tuition are successfully cornering a market which has been traditionally dominated by publicly funded schools.
The cut in public funding for schools has led to cuts in many of their programs including arts and sports. There has also been a major reduction in summer school programs, and this is where tutoring companies have found their demand increasing. Some have reported as much as a double increase in enrolment for the upcoming vacation.
The tuition agencies, so used to providing supplementary education, have adapted to replicate the education usually provided by students’ schools. Rather than playing more of a supporting role, tutors are now providing a genuine alternative for students who feel that the school provide all that they need.
