A Saturday school in Stoke-on-Trent is continuing to flourish despite its funding being cut over four years ago. A report on the This Is Staffordshire website explains how the HeadStart Science and Maths school has survived since the funding was taken away by relying on tutors volunteering their time for the scheme.

The students are aged between 11 and 16, and runs for two hours every Saturday. The tutors are often from Saffordshire and Keele Universities, and include university lecturers, as well as undergraduates. For the undergraduates they are often keen to get some tutoring experience, because they plan to follow a career in teaching.

Despite surviving for so long without any funding, the project coordinator, Joy Henry, is now appealing for more volunteers to tutor the students. She said: “The teachers don’t have to come every week. They can come once or twice a month – it’s whatever they can offer. We just need more people to teach.”
