A tutor in Epsom has been nominated for a Grammy Award after creating artwork for the Pixes’ Minotaur Deluxe Edition boxed set. Vaughan Oliver is a tutor at the University of Creative Arts (UCA), and used his students’ help to design the artwork which has led to his nomination.
Vaughan owns a design company, v23, and when presented with the task of the work for the Pixies, felt that “visceral, raw typography, using a variety of techniques” was the path to take. The tutor said that, for these reasons, he felt that his students would be ideal for the job. Also, Vaughan thinks that involving students in such a task gives them valuable design experience with a real art director. He said “The students truly rose to the occasion. I think it’s the most successful project I’ve worked on in 30 years and has been, all round, a very rewarding experience.”
Vaughan will Jet off to the awards, which will be screened live on American television, in February, but it’s the benefit he leaves behind in the UK among the students he tutors who have already received their award. They said that the skills gained from being tutored by Vaughan on a real project is one thing, but the reputation they’ve gained after their work has been nominated for such a prestigious award will give them a real head start when looking for a design job in such a competitive industry.
