New figures produced by Ipsos Mori have revealed that 38% of London school children received private tuition at some point in their school career, compared with 23% nationally. This year, 25% of London pupils are currently receiving private tuition, almost double the national average.
When asked the reason for taking up private tuition, 58% of students said that they required tuition for help with a specific exam. The more specific the guidelines and assessment criteria set my exam boards has become, the more time students need to invest in learning exactly how to answer questions. 44% responded that they required help with school work in general, often because they were not getting the help from the teachers which they require.
Only 14% of students responded that they were having private tuition because they loved the subject, demonstrating that many London students and parents feel that having a private tutor is a necessary part of schooling, ensuring that they do as well in assessments as possible.
