A new survey conducted by education charity the Sutton Trust has revealed that Black and Asian families are around twice as likely to hire a private tutor for their children. The results suggest that 42 % of Asian state-school students and 38 % of Black students have received private tuition compared with 20% of white students.
Reviewing the results, the Times Educational Supplement has suggested that ethic-minority parents feel disenfranchised with the system, and feel that schools are not meeting their children’s needs. Although some local authorities contribute to home tuition for disadvantaged children, it is thought that many of the parents surveyed pay between £20 and £60 an hour in order to boost their children’s education.
The Sutton Trust highlighted the fact that private tuition has boomed during the recession, and warned that the growing reliance on private tutors to supplement poor education means that poorer students whose parents cannot afford tuition will miss out
