Fewer places, more competition
According to the BBC Education website (29/03/2012), most universities in England are going to have fewer places to offer students this year, as the funding changes in higher education are implemented.
The Higher Education Funding Council for England suggests that about three out of four universities could reduce places - some by more than 10%.
While the new fees, of £9000 per year, which some universities will be charging may well put off some students, it seems that with universities actually cutting the number of places available, competition for places will be even more serious than usual. With the top universities already demanding up to 3 A* A levels, or equivalent, the pressure is on for students and pupils to knuckle down and ensure they make the grade this year.
Extra tuition, in these competitive times, will often make the difference between getting the place of your dreams or not. Tutors have often just been through the exam system themselves and are familiar with all the tricks and techniques which will see that top grade come through in August.
