At this time of year, so many people say to me that we ‘must be so busy at the moment’ because of the summer exams. In fact, although we do get quite a few last minute requests from students panicking before their exams, we’re actually calming down in terms of the volume of issues we have to deal with.
For me, May is probably one of my quietest times of the year. Since most of the work I do now is longer term planning, the hope is that when our tutors are ridiculously busy, I’m not. If I am busy when lots of lessons are happening, it’s usually because I haven’t planned well and have to iron out some problems.
After receiving the flyers last week, now I just have to work out when we’ll distribute them, and at the same time warn our assessors that they’re about to get really busy. After that I’ll sit down and think about how to organise my work for the summer, and hope that the European Championships don’t get in the way too much. There are a lot of long-term projects that I’m halfway through: the qualification overhaul, online tuition, and a redesign of our new student form. It looks like they should all culminate this summer, and if I don’t plan everything carefully I can see myself struggling to cope, especially if I don’t allow myself to work 16 hours a day.
