When Tutors Go Bad

It’s been another week of annoying admin tasks for a lot of the time. I’ve been trying to make it easier for us to deal with situations when tutors do something wrong, so that we do things in a more standard way. Until now I’ve just looked at the situation and decided what to do, but ideally Laura should be able to do that, and we want to standardise what we do. Basically I’ve just added a few functions that Laura can click so that tutors are charged if they have broken a term in their agreement, and the tutor is sent an email explaining what has happened. However, generally we do our best not to charge tutors for doing something wrong, and just explain what they’ve done wrong and why it’s bad for us and/or their student. It’s only really when a tutor has persistently ignored our warnings that we’re left with no option but to apply a charge; sometimes it’s the only way to get through to someone.

I took quite a big step towards categorising all of our subjects last week. Whilst sitting on the floor trying to stick a load of subjects on my massive sheet of paper, I realised that I couldn’t do what I was hoping to do (put the subjects in a tree like a family tree). After sitting with cups of coffee doing nothing but thinking for about 4 hours I finally realised that the subjects have to be in a big Venn diagram. This is actually a conceptually simpler thing to do than the tree, but the only problem is displaying the information in a pretty way. Happily though, I can start to categorise everything now and work on displaying it prettily later.
