“My students have to understand, tutoring is only my second job!”

“My students have to understand, tutoring is only my second job!”

I was rather surprised to read this in an email from one of our tutors yesterday, as I’m sure you can imagine. Don’t get me wrong, we are well aware that tutoring is often a way to earn some spare cash in spare time rather than a career choice. However, we do expect that tutors treat our clients and the students to the kind of service which means that they won’t feel as though they are not your main priority.

Our students pay good money for the tuition we offer and as such both expect and deserve a high quality of service. If you are really busy the day you receive a new tutee’s contact details, there’s no need to delay that first contact, it only takes 2 minutes to fire off an email introducing yourself and letting them know you will call tonight or tomorrow. If you haven’t time to file a student report on our system or if you haven’t seen the parents for a few sessions, it only takes 2 minutes to send a quick email commenting on their child’s progression.

All of the above make the client feel valued and project an attitude of responsible professionalism. Tutoring isn’t just about a few quick bucks on the side. To be a good tutor, to receive the level of feedback which may ultimately result in a tier promotion for you, takes a little more care, a little more respect, for the parents & students who pay for your time and allow you to earn that extra money. Don’t treat them with disrespect; they are the ones paying your wages - without them there would be no extra cash.
