What should I teach at the Assessment

I receive a surprising number of queries regarding the above. Those who are about to undergo their assessment are often very worried about what subject is appropriate or whether it has to be related to their own subjects.

The most important thing to do is check the academic background of the assessor. If it is different from their own, I ask them to think of something interesting about their subject. For instance my field is English Literature, so I would be quite interested to learn about circulation of the blood, or how a certain chemical reaction occurs.

If the assessor’s field is similar to your own then you might have to strike out a little into the unknown. When I went for my assessment I had just read an article on how honeybees communicated. I used this and to test understanding in my ‘student’ asked them to locate a chocolate bar which I’d hidden in the room and whose location I acted out as a honeybee. Not only was it funny, but it rewarded the student for his understanding.

There is a lot of information on the website about how we like tutors to teach. Read this before you decide what to teach and then teach something you are genuinely interested in yourself. Enthusiasm always shines through to a student.
