You can only do so much!
What do you do when a student just seems to lack commitment? When you have tried everything and, after a brief response, seems not to care about their results quite as much as you do.
Ultimately a student’s grades rest on their own performance. You can only help as much as they are willing to let you, or as much as they are willing to learn.
When it comes to this time of year students seem to fall into one of two camps; those who step it up and cram as much learning in to the final couple of weeks and those who sit back and think they’re nearly there and that they can’t learn anymore. This can be as valuable a lesson as any that tells them how to get a few extra marks in the exam.
Students need to take responsibility for their own exam grades, their own future. There is after all only so much an encouraging tutor and a supportive parent, who is willing to pay for more lessons, can do. Hopefully the student will perform to his / her potential in the exam room but there is one thing for sure, you won’t be there and it might only be at this point that the student comes to realise how much they ought to have been listening to you and absorbing your advice through all those lessons.
