What exactly does BIg Business want from schools?

Big Business is always carping about exam results. Not enough kids take Maths A Level. Not enough can do simple mental arithmetic. School leavers can’t write letters, reports, professional standard emails. Their spelling is atrocious, their grammar worse. They don’t know how to behave in a professional environment. They could do with more vocational skills.

Well, education can’t be everything to everyone all of the time. Big Business must take some of the responsibility for educating their new starters themselves. Training on the job must form part of a youngster’s induction to the world of work. They can’t have it all ways.

The curriculum simply cannot contain both academic work and vocational work to a high standard. Surely it’s time to decide what we want from our school education system and what business can take responsibility for. After all, not all school leavers wish to enter the world of big business, some have a different career path in mind.
