Last week Harriet and I had a meeting to discuss our strategy to get a good, organic, Google ranking (appearing high in the main search, rather than in the sponsored links). The trouble at the moment is that our organic ranking has been slowly dropping for a few months, and I think that the company we currently pay to improve the ranking is not doing a very good job. I spent a few days learning about how to improve our ranking, and there are lots of people out there prepared to give their advice, but the only advice that really made a lot of sense was the advice from Google themselves. It sounds really obvious, but their advice is create a good website; one which our customers want to use, and which is relevant to the search someone does to find our site; tutors and students.
Now, obviously we are doing our best to make our website as helpful for tutors and students as it is, but we decided that we should cut down on the amount of articles we write, and focus on increasing content which students, in particular, really want to read. I think we’ll still add the occasional tuition news article, but I’ll probably reduce the amount that I write this blog, and only add things that tutors and students genuinely want to read.
