The government has begun talks regarding setting up a Royal College of Teaching, which would become an independent professional body for teachers. The college would be considered the authoritative voice of teaching, providing professional and informed advice and support.
Exam board AQA is sponsoring research as to how a professional body for teachers might be organized, and the proposed plans are backed by MPs on the select education committee. However, there are concerns that the body should remain independent, and not be seen as an extension of the government.
Teachers have cautiously welcomed the move, but there remain concerns as to how the body would be funded and administrated. The select education committee have conceded that the body would have to be set up and run by teachers in order to build the reputation it would need in order to become an established port of call for teachers.
