I moved house last week which caused a bit of disruption work-wise. I’m staying with family for a week before moving into my new place, which basically means having everything in boxes and struggling to keep up with the projects I’ve been working on. Because of all that, I’ve decided to spend the next few days adding the finishing touches to the new website design.
For about five years I’ve been defending our website from people who say it looks dated. The thing is, those people are generally tutors, and generally below 30, so they tend to look at more websites than the parents who contact us, and are a bit more discerning about how a website should look. Thankfully the website is widely complemented on how easy it is to use, and that was always the main goal. I hate websites where it’s impossible to work out how to do the simplest thing, and we’ve tried to make it as easy as possible for tutors to update us on their students, and for parents to request a tutor. The test was always that if my mum can work out how to request a student then we’re on the right track.
As time’s gone on, though, I’ve realised that there’s no harm in having both a beautiful website and one that’s easy to use, and I think the new design is close to achieving that. My worry lately is that parents are arriving at our website and concluding that no effort is put in to it.
Hopefully I’ll be able to finish off most of the design this week, but it is a mammoth task to change all the pages to the new design, so that may take a couple more weeks. Watch this space.
