Head teachers have said that parents need to take a more active role in children’s learning. The National Association of Head Teachers has published advice to parents, saying that parents should make learning opportunities at home. They have said that it is crucial that parents to help children with reading and times tables, and that parents should also find more creative ways for their children to learn. The leaflet available to parents makes suggestions on how to make learning at home fun.

Pointing out the crucial role parents play in children’s education, the leaflet advises that parents make themselves as available as possible. It suggests that parents help put on school trips, organise educational visits to museums, woodland walks, cooking and model-making. The ‘Giving your child a helping hand’ leaflet’ is designed to give parents ideas as to how to support their child’s learning. It encourages a wide range of activities for different subjects, including keeping plants and animals, and going on nature trails.

The leaflet also explains the importance of parents keeping in touch with their child’s school. It urges parents to ensure that they attend school events such as parents’ evenings and school productions, and emphasises the importance of keeping teachers in touch with any changes at home which may affect their child’s learning. The guide concludes by saying that children can benefit hugely from just talking with their parents, and says that parents should try to engage with their children as much as possible.
