More University students than ever before are turning to private tutor to help them through their course. According to an article on the Telegraph’s website, 20% now seek extra help during their degree, with two thirds seeing a one-on-one tutor, and a fifth finding a group tutor with other friends from university.
It’s suggested that increasing competition for employment is a major factor for the increase in university level tutoring. There are more young graduates entering the workplace than ever before, and whereas previously any second class degree might be accepted by employers, there is increasing pressure to get a first class degree to stand out from the crowd.
Another suggestion is that students are arriving at university without the necessary skills to do well. University work is a step up from A Levels, and the quality of some students’ written work and they way in which they organise their thoughts means that they need a tutor to get up to speed. Obviously students are taught in much larger groups at university, and don’t have the small group lessons or one-to-one teaching that a tutor can provide.
