Ken Watts is a retired mechanical Engineer but has found a new passion tutoring students in the US. He was visiting a friend in Kentucky in 2009 and spent some time tutoring the friend’s son in physics and calculus, and liked it so much that when he got home he immediately signed up to be a tutor at the Live Oak public library.

Over the last 9 years Ken has tutored more than 70 students, and currently sees 7 a week to help them with maths, particularly algebra. He says he just realised that he enjoyed it; “I don’t believe math is really hard. I think the reason most students who are having trouble and don’t like math is because they can’t do it. I find that many times once I show them that they can do it they don’t dislike it as much and some of them even find they like it.”

Ken says that he thinks maths is important to be successful in life and teaches people to think. His past students can’t speak more highly of him. Jeremy Kramer was so adverse to maths that he didn’t want to go to class, but after tuition with Ken managed to get a A. Wendy Lashley said that she saw a dramatic change in her son after the lessons; “my son was behind and hated math but with Mr Watts help, he was able to catch up and now loves math. He was truly a blessing.”
