A boy in Belgium aged 8 is heading off to university having graduated from high school alongside 18 year olds. Reported on the BBC, Laurent Simons completed 6 years of study in just a year and a half. His Belgian father and Dutch mother say he has an IQ of 145.
Speaking on Belgian radio station RTBF, Laurent said his favourite subject is maths because it’s so vast, containing statistics, geometry and algebra. He will have a 2 month holiday before attending university, and says he hasn’t yet decided what he wants to do long term. Laurent considered becoming a surgeon and an astronaut, but now thinks he might go into computers.
Laurent’s father said that he struggled when he was younger to play with other children, and that he has never been particularly interested in toys. However, his parents don’t want to push him into an academic job; “if he decided tomorrow to become a carpenter, that would not be a problem for us, as long as he is happy.”
