A lot of our new tutors ask at their interview about the typical student and what to expect when they see requests for tuition. The most common thing is for someone to ask for an hour a week until their exams. Obviously sometimes students ask for more intensive lessons, but not as often as weekly lessons.
We encourage consistent tuition. We avoid suggesting more lessons than a student had planned because it’s in our financial interest but if a client knows that they want roughly 10 lessons then we’ll try to create a plan starting immediately so that the lessons are as spread out as possible. This is the most effective way for the tutor student relationship to develop.
With this consistent plan in mind, we contact all of out clients at the beginning of the academic year and ask whether they are considering tuition this year. So very many people respond saying that they do want a tutor which on the one hand is great because they’re clearly grateful for the reminder, but it is concerning that more people aren’t better at planning the course of tutoring; if we were not to contact our clients who knows when they would get in touch, if at all.
No one forgets to send their child back to school, and the days of using a tutor as some help at the last minute before an exam are outdated. If you’re reading this and thinking that maybe a tutor would be a good idea at some point this year then please get in touch now. Something we hear all the time in May and June from students and their parents is that they wish they had found their tutor earlier.
