The starting salary for a teacher in England could increase to £30,000 in plans recently announced by the government. Reported on the BBC, it follows the promise of a huge rise in the education budget and is an attempt to recruit more and better teachers and try to retain them in the profession.
The minimum starting salary for a teacher at the moment is just under £24,000 outside of London but the government want to increase this by £6,000 over the the next three years. The hope is that a significantly higher starting salary will attract more graduates to train as teachers after recruitment targets have been consistently missed over the last few years.
The new plans did not address what many people in the industry consider to be an equal problem, which is retaining teachers once they have qualified and gained experience. Roughly half of new teachers leave the profession within 10 years and although this was acknowledged, it wasn’t clear what would be done. The DfE said that they want teaching to be one of the most attractive careers for the best young graduates.
