In a report on the Suffolk News Herald, literacy tutors in the area have been praised for the help given to members of the local community, and the impact the tutors have on people’s lives. That was the message given to 15 private tutors at a meeting recently, by Ann Kirk, stepdaughter of one of the creators of the Laubach method of teaching reading, which is the method employed by tutors in the Suffolk area.

The Laubach method of teaching reading was developed by Elizabeth Mooney Kirk and Dr. Frank Laubach. The two travelled the world, offering reading tuition, so that people could read in their native languages. They created the ‘Each One,Teach One’ program, and it’s estimated that tutors involved in this program have helped 60 million people to read.

Ann March, president of the literacy council in Suffolk said that many hundreds of the 60 million people were right here in Suffolk. She added that the illiteracy problem is not going away, and although many adults can read well enough to function in their daily lives, it’s not good enough to improve their social situation. March says that the tutors, who also teach English as a foreign language, are genuinely changing lives.
