A recent graduate, Charles Cohn, has set up a tuition service in the south east of the US after realising that there was a gap in the market for high quality, tailored tuition. In a report on the St. Louis Globe-Democrat website, Charles explains how he really struggled to find a good tutor when he was studying for his undergraduate degree, which gave him the idea to set up his own company.
Varsity Tutors has steadily grown in the last two years. Cohn started with two full-time tutors, and contacted a number of schools in the area to arrange for extra help to be give to their students. Within a few weeks they had received very positive feedback on their lessons, and Cohn had taken on 8 more tutors in preparation for the following term.
The company now employs 10 full time staff, and has over 300 tutors on its books. They have expanded from St. Louis into Chicago, Phoenix, Houston and Tucson, and Cohn hopes to set up tutors in every major city in the US. He also has plans to develop an online tutoring service, where face-to-face lessons are not possible.
