An afterschool club: The Blaine Boys & Girls Club, based in Blaine in the US, have begun a scheme offering private tuition to primary, elementary and middle school students based in Blaine. The lessons take place after school, between 3:15 and 4:45.
The tutors are generally retired teachers, who are volunteering their time to help run the new initiative. Each student attends a 45 minute tuition session once or twice a week on weekdays, and at the student, tutor, and parent’s convenience. The tutoring costs $3 if the student has one lesson a week, and $5 if they have two.
This is another initiative in the wake of the recent criticism of the US government’s policy to provide extra tuition to all school students who are falling behind their peers. The criticism was based around private tuition agencies abusing the system, and often charging the state for tuition which didn’t take place. Tutoring schemes such as this one in Blaine may begin to start up more frequently, as schools worry about the quality and morality of the tutors that can be found elsewhere.
