Muslim professionals in East London have set up a tutoring service because they are disappointed with the general standard of education in the UK. In a report on their website, the BBC have revealed that the Islamic Circles Supplementary School (ICSS) offers tuition to students aged 7-18 in Newham free of charge.
One of the volunteers at the school, Aabida Khan, is also a trainee solicitor. She says that some of the teenage students whom she’s taught can’t read or write, and she’s concerned that the current school system is failing many students.
Generally, in the UK, Muslim students are underachieving, and one of the reasons postulated for this is a lack of support in their home life. ICSS is not simply intended to tutor students, but also to provide role models for those struggling, in the hope that it will motivate them to achieve more.
